ITEE Student Research Assistants

Scope of the Project

Large class sizes often make it difficult for academic staff to interact with students on an individual basis, and swelling enrolments tend to dictate the style of assessments and quality of feedback provided to students.  Feedback has long been an area in need of improvement as indicated by students on course evaluations; consequently, the Faculty and Schools within EAIT must seek new ways to deliver higher-quality feedback despite the challenges posed by several hundred students in a single course.  This project addresses that challenge and provides an opportunity to make large classes feel smaller for students through the development of an individually tailored feedback system that can be deployed into any large course across the Faculty—delivering to academics an easy-to-use program will enhance formative feedback for students to assist in their learning.

Position Description

Our team of researchers from EAIT and the Schools of Civil Engineering, Mech & Mining, and ITEE seeks two ITEE student researchers as a key element of this strategically funded teaching and learning grant.  The student researchers will work directly with project leader Dr David Knight, a postdoctoral fellow in engineering education, and will complete the full research and development process to deliver the platform at the end of the semester.  Student researchers will conduct a needs assessment by arranging meetings with academic staff, design and develop an interface, pilot their product with staff, make adjustments as necessary, and make arrangements for strategic dissemination—in addition to building student researchers’ résumés, we aim to make this project an enriching educational experience.  Throughout this process, student researchers will be given creative flexibility if they have ideas to make the system even more useful.  Developing a product that will be implemented by the end of the semester will be a unique educational experience.

The project will take place during Semester 1, 2013.  Student researchers will be expected to meet with the project leader periodically to provide progress reports, and the final product should be delivered by May 31, 2013.  Each student will earn $4200 for the semester of work (i.e., $300 per week for 14 weeks, equivalent to the pay rate of the Summer Scholars Program).

Applications should be sent to Dr David Knight at db.knight@uq.edu.au and include a cover letter describing the applicant’s qualifications for the position as well as a résumé/CV.  Applicants should have a strong programming and/or software development skill set.  Experience developing such a product is not mandatory.

ATO Graduate Program Business Design and Informatin Technology

BE QUICK – Applications close for Business Design and IT in the ATO Graduate Program (Salary $57,000+) on 2 April 2013

Business design (Brisbane and Canberra)

In business design our focus for 2013 is on analysis, skills and innovative problem solving.

A degree

This year applications will be open for those with a bachelor degree or higher in the following areas:

  • design
  • industrial design
  • business information technology
  • human computer interaction
  • interaction design
  • business informatics
  • information technology
  • engineering
  • organisational psychology
  • graphic design
  • human and information services
  • business
  • social sciences.

What do we do?

Our business designers work in multi-disciplinary teams to help find better ways of doing things. They design new or improved products, services, systems and processes.

Business design explores opportunities to improve administrative practices to make the tax system easier, cheaper and more personalised for taxpayers. In doing so, business designers play an important role in enhancing the community’s confidence in our administration of Australia’s tax system, helping us towards our vision of creating tax and superannuation systems that are community assets.

What is design in the ATO?

For us, design is about facilitating change to benefit the community. Change may come in the form of new legislation, reviews, innovation, continuous improvement or business process re-engineering. The designer’s role is to help implement this change (or intent) in a way that takes into account the impacts on taxpayers and our organisation.

What sort of fields will you work in?

You can work in fields such as:

  • solution design / business analysis
  • user-centred design
  • information design.

Solution design/business analysis involves analysing business problems to design the most effective solution to meet our needs and those of the community. The solution may be a combination of people, processes and technology.

A solution designer/business analyst will:

  • act as a liaison between the client and the people who build the solution
  • coordinate discussions and work with stakeholders to design solutions that meet client needs and business objectives
  • ensure the final design for the solution fits with current systems and processes
  • design and analyse information technology solutions to match business requirements and be able to translate between business and information technology builders.
  • take an ‘outside-in’ approach (designing from the perspective of the end users or taxpayers), being consultative, collaborative and willing to co-design.

User-centred design is about designing user-friendly products that make it easy for taxpayers to comply with the tax system. A user-centred designer may assist in a new tax form, an online service or perhaps an update to our website.

A user-centred designer will:

  • test a product’s functionality and usability with users
  • analyse and interpret user data to improve the functionality of a product
  • write a detailed report on the findings of user research sessions.

Information design generally involves working with other designers and technical experts for a mutual understanding of an issue or process to make an informed decision.

An information designer will do this by taking complex and ambiguous information and making it easy to understand by:

  • structuring and combining information
  • removing ambiguity and visualising concepts
  • avoiding technical language
  • converting content into an accessible and useful format for use by the target audience.

Information Technology (Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide)

 A degree
This year applications will be open for those with a bachelor degree or higher in the following areas:

  • information technology (IT)
  • computer science
  • software engineering
  • business informatics
  • business systems
  • information systems
  • computing
  • other relevant IT degrees (and double degrees).

In the IT area, you will be working as part of the team in the Enterprise Solutions and Technology (EST) group. This group is responsible for our IT program of work, which enables and supports a number of services and initiatives.

EST supports our organisation to achieve business outcomes by providing efficient and effective enterprise solutions and IT services. This includes IT architecture and design services, applications, infrastructure, and security services.

EST provides leadership enterprise processes and capabilities through the following areas:

  • Business Solutions
  • Enterprise Applications
  • Office of the Chief Knowledge Officer
  • Strategy, Planning and Assurance
  • Major Programs
  • Service Operations.

EST provides enterprise solutions and technology services that underpin much of our work.

As a graduate you will play an important role in our efforts to respond innovatively to the changing needs of the community, helping enhance our already world-leading processes, infrastructure and technology. You will undertake challenging and rewarding work progressing through rotational placements in one or more of the following areas:

  • IT strategy
  • architecture design processes
  • information management
  • applications development
  • risk management
  • project management
  • IT and information security.

If you are looking for a head start on a challenging and rewarding career, this is the program for you.

We want to get you involved in the design and implementation of efficient and effective solutions to enhance interactions with the tax and superannuation systems.

We also contribute to whole-of-government initiatives.

We strive to improve our processes and systems by developing calculators, portals, phone and online services. We challenge you to investigate issues by listening to community feedback and identifying improvements. We want you to help us continue to strengthen our analytical and risk-management capabilities to provide greater differentiation of our services and compliance treatments.

You will ensure our processes, infrastructure and technology meet the changing needs of the community, and support the client experience by delivering improvements that:

  • ensure the systems that support tax time are stable and secure.
  • enable us to respond quickly and innovatively to change.
  • leverage and adapt the use of our integrated systems to re-engineer processes and improve productivity and effectiveness.
  • upgrade systems to meet our government commitments, including displaying superannuation membership
  • promote safeguards against technology-enabled threats, in particular identity theft and risk to the integrity of the tax file number
  • develop strategies to lessen the impact of our activities on the environment.

Enhancing the capability of our people to meet future corporate outcomes is a key priority. By investing in our people we become more innovative, agile and responsive, which instils enthusiasm, commitment and pride in the work we do for all Australians.

Becoming an IT graduate will give you the opportunity to experience our excellent work conditions, job diversity, and career development opportunities. You can contribute towards the tax and superannuation systems that underpin the Australian way of life.
